My Osteoporosis

Simplifying the treatment

ADD CALCIUM AND VITAMIN D IN YOUR DIET TO STOP AND CONTROL OSTEOPOROSIS

Millions of people in the world suffer with Osteoporosis. It’s a dangerous condition if one is not careful.

I was recently diagnosed with Osteoporosis in the neck of my left hip. It is unusual for men to get osteoporosis; however, 12 years ago I was treated for prostate cancer. I found out the treatment of prostatectomy, radiation, and hormone therapy I chose, most likely caused the Osteoporosis.  Even though I do not consider this a life threatening condition, it can cause bone fracture problems somewhere in my future.

My doctor immediately prescribed Fosamax, a popular treatment for this condition, as my treatment. He also suggested 1200 mg of Calcium and 1200 IUs of Vitamin D. These drugs and supplements have many side effects if not taken exactly is prescribed. For example, Fosamax can harm the lining of the esophagus. In my case, I have Barrett’s esophageal syndrome, which does not do well with a drug like Fosamax. It also affects the drug, Atenolol, which I take for Atrial-Fibrillation. Over dosing with Calcium and Vitamin D supplements can be equally harmful to the body. I also found my doctor’s advice wrong in the amount of Vitamin D. The required daily dosage is 600 IUs not 1200. These things raised a lot of questions about the treatment. You know the old saying, “The Cure is worse than the disease?” Well, that ‘s where we were at this juncture.

So my wife, bless her heart, researched the benefits of Calcium and Vitamin D in my diet. A blood test confirmed vitamin D in my body was low. Normal range for healthy vitamin D is 30 – 100. Mine read 23. Since I am 70 years of age, my daily requirement for Calcium is 1200 mg, and for Vitamin D, 600 IU. I asked my doctor to work with me on this, that I feared the negative effects of Fosamax, and would rather get my amount of Calcium and Vitamin D through proper diet, rather than supplements. As a result I will have a Vitamin D check in three months and a bone density scan in one year to compare to these two bases.

At the grocery store, my wife searched for foods rich in Calcium and Vitamin D. I also discovered that 15 minutes of sunshine, without applying sun screen, twice a week can produce enough Vitamin D in the body for an entire week. I feel allowing nature and proper diet is much safer than taking chances of overdosing on pills, and battling side effects of drugs, such as Fosamax.
